Creating space for artists
About Create Space
It all came about during that period where the whole world seemed to grind to a halt, where hugs became extinct and banana breads were baked. I worked quietly in my childhood bedroom, surrounded by comforting memories, on attempting to complete the final segment of my masters degree.
Our independent project aims to widen our perspective of what dance can be, so I began to investigate how social media impacts upon our dance industry. There were so many different branches surrounding this topic, so I jumped from one to another trying to grab something that really resonated with me. I also spoke to many wonderful artists to hear their thoughts about social media which helped steer me in my final direction.
After putting a survey together, intended for dance artists who engage with social media, the majority of artists expressed a love for social media as it provides them with a free platform to market and showcase their work and presents multiple opportunities for them to engage with. They also stated that this online dance community can be extremely supportive and can be a great place to network and find inspiration.
But there were also many responses raising concerns about how social media can sometimes be overwhelming, with artists feeling as though they are living underneath a microscopic eye, with everyone trying to showcase their best versions of themselves at all times. This can create very unrealistic expectations of artist and our work.
So here is where we ended up. A blog! A blog where artists can publish anything they fancy. Whether that be a project they have been working upon, a show reel, a piece of writing. Whatever they want! I wanted to try and find a healthy balance, a sort of middle ground. A place where we can get the exposure and inspiration, but be away from the scrutiny of the perfect visage we often see on social media sites.
